Strong Constituencies

An analysis of the performance of the parties in the last 4 assembly elections from 1991 till 2006 give us the following statistics on constituencies where a party has won repeatedly.

In only 4 constituencies have parties won consecutively: Harbour (DMK); Egmore (DMK); Sankaranayanarkoil (AIADMK) & Tiruthuraipundi (CPI)

Other statistics:

No. of constituencies where the same party has won last 3 times (from 1996 to 2006): 23

DMK – 19
PMK – 2
CPM – 1
CPI – 1

No. of constituencies where the same party has won the last 2 times (2001 & 2006): 60

AIADMK – 43
PMK – 5
INC – 5
CPM – 4
DMK -3

However this statistics does not consider the following 2 points:
1. This statistics does not take into a/c party splits & mergers, it just takes individual parties. E.g. INC split into TMC(M), which later merged back into INC – so if INC & TMC (M) had won the same constituency on subsequent elections, it is not counted in this statistics (Vellore is an example – won by same candidate on last 4 occasions contesting on INC ticket and later on TMC(M) and finally back on INC ticket)
2. This statistics also does not consider constituencies won by the same person but contesting in different parties. E.G. a person would have won 1st as a AIADMK candidate and later as a DMK candidate. This is not considered

List of constituencies are parties won in all 3 elections from 1996
